I use a FIB pencil under my a freer motion using the whole of First let's look at the pencils and watercolors, as it smudges less than the arm. This technique makes techniques you use before you start softer pencils, such as the 7B, which is broad, expansive marks and I use
your washes. great for drawing and smudging. this often standing at an easel.

I have used most of the reference photograph (below), but you can reproduce just a small area if you prefer, such as the middle part of the gate to practice your brushstrokes. Remove any clutter you don't like. Work at an angle with your board propped up. Wet any areas first to assist the flow of paint.

Step1

  1. Mix a good puddle of cerulean blue and lemon yellow and use the whole of a large Round brush to paint the grass behind the barns. Keep it simple and don't be tempted to fiddle. The paint will keep moving and mixing on the paper until the water evaporates.

  2. Paint an underlying wash of pale yellow ochre for the buildings and foreground.

  3. When dry, mix a roof color from burnt sienna and a little cadmium red then add cerulean blue wet in wet for darker mixes and contrast. Use the tip of the brush for accurate edges and the body of the brush to fill in. Try to move between using the tip of your brush and the body
of your brush for ease and control of the paint. Stop painting before the paint dries to avoid unwanted streaks.

Step 2

  1. Use a big mixing area to ensure good puddles of paint. The paint on your brush should be almost dripping off. Practise blocking in colour using both the body and tip of the Round or filbert brush. The stone colour is made from yellow ochre with touches of the blue, just enough to grey it off and not make green. Let your edges blend and merge.

  2. Once dry, paint the trees and gate using the Rigger and paint the foreground grasses using the 'm' type movements. Allow your hand to move freely in various directions. Next month I will look at how to paint graded washes and linking washes of more thanone colour.
